Heating Up at Hawgin’ on Lanier
Is it getting hot in here, or is it just us? Turkey Smoke made its return at Hawgin’ on Lanier in Cumming, Georgia, in August where a whopping 71 teams competed for the Turkey Smoke title! The competition was stiff, but the teams brought their A-game and a whole lot of enthusiasm for experimenting with delicious Perdue turkey breast.
When the smoke settled, judges selected bacon-wrapped turkey jalapeño poppers as the winning dish created by Hanna Garrett and the “Piglitically Incorrect” crew from Brandon, Mississippi.
Hawgin’ on Lanier was Piglitically Incorrect’s first Turkey Smoke competition, and not only did they go home with a cash prize, but the team also scored an invitation to compete in the KCBS World Invitational this November in Kansas City!
Also bringing home the (turkey) bacon in second and third place were Redbones BBQ from Florence, Alabama, and Cooters N Smoke of Davenport, Florida.
Although barbecue season has looked a little different this year, competition teams are keeping the spirit alive and bringing the heat to the judge’s table. Next up in the Turkey Smoke Series, we’re headed to BBQ and Fly in on the River in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, August 14-15. While visitors at upcoming events may be limited, stay tuned at @ServeTurkey as we share competition updates and behind-the-scenes action.
